Road Services
The Tonkin Gap Project (TG) successfully addressed the traffic bottleneck where Tonkin Highway reduced from three lanes to two in the Bayswater and Redcliffe areas. This upgrade significantly improved traffic flow, reduced travel times, and enhanced road safety, making a substantial impact on the region’s road infrastructure.

In parallel, the Associated Works (MEL) provided essential rail-enabling infrastructure for the METRONET Morley-Ellenbrook Line. The project included the construction of underpasses and dive structures, facilitating the integration of rail services along the median of Tonkin Highway and enabling trains to exit in Malaga.

As part of the staged delivery of the Tonkin Gap Project, Dowsing Group was awarded a subcontract package encompassing cold planing/profiling, 3D trimming, and pavement reclamation works. A key focus of the project’s sustainability targets was the reclamation and reuse of granular pavement material from the existing alignment, which was repurposed as subbase material for the new alignment.

Deliverables included:

  • ~ 300,000m2 of profiling to various depths ranging from 0 – 500mm of both thick lift asphalt and granular pavements.
  • ~ 45,000m2 of granular pavement reclamation.
  • ~ 30,000m2 of 3D machine control trimming of sub ballast capping.

Dowsing Group played a crucial role in this initiative, reclaiming approximately 45,000m², or around 30,000 tonnes, of existing granular pavement. This significant contribution helped the project achieve a Gold Infrastructure Sustainability (IS) Design Rating from the Infrastructure Sustainability Council (ISC).

Additionally, all waste material generated from the cold planing/profiling activities was recycled, either as second-grade roadbase or used as Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) in new asphalt mixes, further contributing to the project’s sustainability goals.

Dowsing Group adhered strictly to the head contractor’s Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) requirements and project standards, ensuring full compliance throughout the execution of the various packages.
